Six Week Super Yacht Barge Cruise Across Europe

The Ultimate Journey

Often forgotten when discussing superyachts are the luxury craft that instead of plying their charter trade at sea, do so on the canals of Europe

We are talking about the large and magnificently outfitted barges who along with their attentive crew reach superyachting standards without the need to loose sight of land.

Like super yachts, barges generally are chartered by the week but we have discovered one magnificent voyage that will offer a unique 1,000 mile, 6 week adventure along the canals and rivers of central Europe, starting from Avignon in Provence and moving all the way to the vibrant city of Amsterdam in Holland.

European Waterways who are specialist in the organizing of barge charter vacations are offering an extraordinary long voyage aboard luxury hotel barge Anjodi on which passengers will experience.

Anjodi is the hotel barge that achieved “film star” status following her many appearances during the hugely popular BBC TV series 'Rick Stein’s French Odyssey', when she carried celebrity chef Rick Stein and a full film crew, on a 400-mile voyage of culinary discovery through South West France.

The 6 week trans Europe cruise takes in cities such as Lyon, Paris and Cologne, the local highlights and culture along famous rivers such as the Rhone, Seine and Rhine, and enchanting smaller waterways such as the Canal de Bourgogne. This adventure will be a mixture of days spent cruising, sight seeing and city stays whilst discovering the regional cuisine and wines of Provence, Beaujolais, Burgundy, Champagne, Alsace and the Moselle and Rhine valleys.

The voyage also follows the advance of the American, British and allied forces liberating the French, Belgium and Dutch populations in World War II. It passes through regions held by the French resistance, areas liberated by Allied Forces and near towns like Arnhem fought over by the airborne forces in operation Market Garden. It is an incredible, unfolding journey for those interested in the historical importance of the period following the D-day landings of June 1944.

Anjodi is a hotel barge of classic Dutch design. She has been completely refurbished in the tradition of Africa hardwoods, handcrafted panelling and shining brass, to create a charming ambience reminiscent of a classic yacht. Her well-planned accommodation offers a choice of four air-conditioned twin or double staterooms, each with full en-suite facilities. The shaded sun deck is spacious, featuring a heated sunken spa pool and teak deck furniture.

Delicious gourmet meals will be expertly prepared by the on board chef, complimented by regional wines and an open bar. The majority of meals are taken aboard, but at least once a week passengers dine ashore.

This Trans Europe cruise is available at a price per person of UK£15,000 based on a minimum of 6 passengers, or as a whole barge charter for UK£110,000. Rates include all meals, wines, open bar, excursions, admittance fees and transfers.

Super Yachts and Jazz Festivals

49th International Jazz Festival Takes Place in Juan Les Pins

Photograph: Joss Stone by Frances Howorth

Best known in super yachting circles as an excellent anchorage and a superb spot to go ashore, Juan-les-Pins during July is to jazz musicians what the Scala of Milan is to opera singers: an important milestone in their career and a very special performance venue.

During the last week it was my great privilege to be able to photograph the Jazz stars under the stars as they performed for an enthusiastic audience of 3000. How many of the owners of the super yachts at anchor close by during the festival were at the show I can not reveal.

“Jazz in Juan” has been described as a veritable mixing pot of styles and the latest trends. This year was no exception with popular music and off-beat, young artistes mixing with the diehards who play the serious Jazz so beloved by the music aficionados.

Stars of this years event were:

  • Joss Stone
  • Jamie Cullum
  • Keith Jarrett Trio

Others performing this year were:

  • Sidney Bechet Memory All Stars
  • Bob Wilber
  • Dr Michael White Sextet
  • Alice Russell
  • Marva Wright
  • The BMW'S Allen Toussaint
  • Roy Hargrove Big Band RH Factor
  • MC Solaar Teychené
  • Jeff Beck
  • Stanley Clarke
  • Marcus Miller & Victor Wooten
  • Eli «Paperboy» Reed
  • Soirée Gospel
  • Tonya Baker

If however you think that was a star studded line up then just wait until the organisers reveal what they have planned for 2010. Next year the festival reaches the ripe old age of 50 and celebrates its half centenary.

Legendary Super Yacht Arrives In The Galapagos

On the 50th Anniversary of the Galapagos National Park and Darwin’s Bicentennial year the vintage super yacht, Grace, begins a series of charters based in the Galapagos National Park.

The superyacht’s history is legend in that it includes WW II action, was owned by Aristotle Onassis and was given by him it Prince Ranier and Grace Kelly’s as a wedding gift on which they spent their honeymoon.

Not since HMS Beagle sailed into the Galapagos Islands carrying a young Charles Darwin in 1835 has a vessel of such historic significance entered the archipelago. Like Beagle, the motor yacht Grace was built in Britain, and served in the Royal Navy.

Grace was originally commissioned one year before the Wall Street Crash of 1929, during the Great Gatsby era, and built by Camper & Nicholson in Southampton, England. Monica, as she was originally named, features a stellar past. After serving as the personal yacht of high powered industrialists, including Sir George Tilley, chairman of the Prudential Insurance Co., she was conscripted into the British Navy during WWII.

Commissioned as Rion, she took part in Dunkirk, captured a German torpedo E-boat and had an unconfirmed sinking of a U-boat to her credit. Winston Churchill is purported to have cruised the Mediterranean aboard her after the war.

In 1951 she was acquired by a company owned by Aristotle Onassis, and it was he who renamed her Arion. He then gave the yacht as a wedding gift to Prince Rainier III of Monaco and his bride, Hollywood film legend Grace Kelly, who rechristened her Deo Juvante II in time to honeymoon aboard her.

Quarsar the company that now operates her has renamed the yacht Grace to recapture this magical time when she delivered the royal couple to Monaco and took them on their Royal honeymoon.

The official launch of the yacht in the Galapagos in July 2009 coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Galapagos National Park. 2009 also marks the bicentennial of Charles Darwin, whose field work in the islands led to his writing of On the Origin of Species and his theory of evolution.

The yacht is according to her operators selling well despite hard economic times, indicating continued demand for high end value in 16 passenger yachts in the Galapagos National Park, which limits daily visitors by vessel to fewer than 2,000.
